Marinated Rib Stew Place: Duggeobi Sikdang (두꺼비식당)

I’m back, and I hope everyone has been staying warm, though it isn’t too terribly cold this winter.

I went to a place to get ribs a while back, and I was pretty impressed, so I decided to do a review. When my friend told me we were going out to get ribs, I imagined just the usual galbi. Little did I know, it was going to be marinated beef ribs prepared in a stew of deliciousness! You can order them to be less spicy if you desire too, which is cool.

The ribs!

The ribs!

Overall, I reallllly liked the ribs at this place. The rice was also good, having some veggies to mix in to them.

As a final note, the prices weren’t too bad. You can also buy the premarinated ribs to go, in case you want to cook them up at home!

Solid Chinese place: 축복 (Chukbok)

I know I know, I haven’t really reviewed any Chinese places and I really need to!

So here it is! Chukbok, located in Cheongjeondong. Daniel recommended this place to me and it really is quite good. Their Ganpungi is DEFINITELY good, as is their Tangsuyuk. They don’t drown the meat in sauce, which means it stays nice and crispy!

The prices here aren’t too terrible either. You are probably going to pay more than your average chinese place, but the Ganpungi and Tangsuyuk are definitely going to be worth it! Also, the portion sizes are quite large you can share each “small” between 2 people easily.

20170104_201134Definitely give this place a try if you haven’t been here yet! I should mention that there IS only floor seating here.

Alternative Pork-Only BBQ place: 반반한되야지 (Banbanhan Doeyaji)

Hello Jecheonians, and tourists possibly!

So I know I already reviewed a BBQ place, but cmon this is Korea. You can’t walk 10 feet without passing 2 BBQ joints. While Hwaromaeul is still my favorite general BBQ place in Jecheon, the “pork place” (named since basically everything here is pork) is a good alternative, especially because it is a bit cheaper than Hwaromaeul. All the BBQ dishes range from 6800 (typical Samgyeopsal) to 9800 (marinated ribs), and the workers here are always really nice.

You can't miss the inflated pig face.

You can’t miss the inflated pig face.

The restaurant is pretty easy to find, over in Cheongjeondong. If you are coming from Angel-in-us going south towards Hwaromaeul, you continue going past it on the right side.

Nice and cheap!

Nice and cheap!

As said, one big draw factor here are the cheap prices. You shouldn’t be paying much over 10,000W even if you order more than just BBQ. Also you can look at fishies!

Pretty standard stuff. All the sides taste fine, and it’s easy to get the workers to bring you more of anything you need.

Good Sushi place in town: 미미초밥 (Mimi Chobap)

And here comes my final post of the first few restaurants I already had prepared!

When it comes to Sushi, you usually have to look pretty hard to find it here, but look no further! Mimi Chobap in Hasodong is a great place to get your sushi fix. They have a pretty good sized menu with a variety of Nigiri and Maki Sushis, as well as Sashimi, Hoedeopbap, and some cooked items.

If you can read Korean, check out the menu here.

This menu has a list of the different sushi sets (Mixed plates at the top, 10 pieces of a single type are at the bottom.)

The sushi itself is quite good and affordable. The nice thing is that you also get miso soup and a salad on the side when you order.

These sides come whenever you order any main courses here.

The sushi itself is of pretty good quality, especially for what you might find in Jecheon (there is another sushi place down the street, but I actually prefer this place over it). Take a look at a buuuuncha pictures I took over time!

This was from my first visit to Mimi Chobap. The presentation is pretty simple, but nice.

The layout of the restaurant is also nice. They have single bar seating against the window, which is nice when you show up alone. Upstairs they have another floor for dining, which is pretty nice (I prefer sitting upstairs… preferably on one of the tables by the ledge!)

Solid good BBQ place: 화로마을 (Hwaromaeul…. AKA Sweet Corn)

And now for a place that everyone is familiar with…. Sweet corn! Which is actually called Hwaromaeul.

This BBQ place really stands out among the multitude of restaurants in Cheongjeon-dong for a few reasons. First, and most importantly, the service. Most Korean restaurants have terrible service by western standards. This place does not, in fact this place has terrific service by most western standards honestly. Water is promptly replaced, waiters are always there to take care of you, your lettuce is refilled before you even realize you are about to take that last leaf, etc. etc.

Second, the food is genuinely good here. There is a reason this place is almost always crowded during dinner. All the side dishes are great, especially the sweet corn that earned the restaurant its name among the foreign community here. I recommend getting the Yangnyeom Galbi, marinated pork ribs (they’re always reliable).

The sides are also plentiful, you may not be able to tell based on the pictures following, but usually there is a good selection of banchan to eat. Also, they have chair seating (this is always a big plus).

I also didn’t include it, but the setup of the restaurant is pretty nice. It has a nice cozy feel to it, and some of the booths give enough privacy to where you don’t feel like you are eating in a crowd of people.

Meat, waiting to be cooked. Portions are pretty good!

If you haven’t been here yet, make sure to stop by!

Shabu-Shabu place: 샤브향 (Shyabeu Hyang)

The winter is starting to roll in, which means Koreans wearing poofy jackets, foreign teachers sitting aimlessly in cold offices, skiing (my favorite), and also the PERFECT WEATHER FOR HOT POT!

*cue the “ta-da” chime with some clapping*

My current favorite place for Shabu-Shabu in Jecheon is Shyabeu Hyang. It’s located on the north part of town. They’re great because they give a great selection of mushrooms and veggies to go into your hotpot! The flavor is also reliably good. Another bonus: They have chair seating, which is great for us who aren’t used to sitting on floors all the time (or just prefer not to)

Plenty of veggies!

Dalkgalbi Place in Hasodong: 강원칡냉면닭갈비 본점 (Gangwon Chilknaengmyeong Dalkgalbi Bonjeom)

Hello all of my fellow forkers! It’s really been a while.

So I have decided to start posting up information on restaurants in the city that I’m living in. Jecheon isn’t particularly well known, so there aren’t many places to find information in English about where to grab a bite. I won’t actually be giving ratings to places, so please don’t be confused when you don’t see any here. To start off, I will be introducing yall to my favorite Dalkgalbi place in town! It’s right here in Haso-dong, where I live.

This place is quite good and well priced. You generally get a lot of meat for the amount you pay, which is around 10,000W per person. They give some nice sides, I always like the little slaw salad they give, as well as the chicken porridge that comes out with the Dalkgalbi. You can also order cheese with your dalkgalbi, which you can dip into the cheese. I know, it’s not traditional, but it’s actually really yummy.
